Kari paces in front of the couch, glaring at the front door. “No way in hell are we sitting here waiting for them to come back. Let’s go anywhere else. I’m so pissed. Aren’t you?”

“Pissed,” I say flatly. Why would he want to spend the rest of the evening with his BS step cousin friend? I am sure we don’t have to worry about them returning soon, if at all. “I might as well go back to Grandma’s.” I don’t even feel like painting.

“We can go back to my house and watch movies, but my parents are home.” She searches through her phone like there’s an answer in there somewhere.

“We can do that here.” I lie on the couch, stretching my bunched muscles.

“No, hell no.” She gathers her bag and keys. “Tye said he might swing by later. Let him. I’m not spending my holiday waiting around for him.”

“This winter break has to get better next week.” My art class would be enough to restore order if the class roster was minus one or two people.

“It will if we do something about it. We have seven whole days before school starts back.” She stops and drops to her knees beside the couch. Her petulant face turns impish.

I close my eyes, dreading her next words. Her endless schemes have racked up enough near misses with our parents that a catastrophe is inevitable. I plan to be nowhere around.

“You should have a party to get it back on track. An early New Year’s bash filled with silver and gold balloons like I did last year.” She goes into elaborate detail about the food and guest list.

I pretend to consider the party that’s not going to happen because it seems to calm her. “Artists do have parties.”

“Hell yeah, they do. Tye and Bray are not invited. Can we do it tonight?”

“Right, but not tonight.” I chew on my inner lip, which only reminds me that an impossibly hot guy was lip-to-lip with me until I messed it up. I sit up. “Let’s go to Patty’s.” I keep quiet about why I want to go to my cousin’s house.

“She’s a better option than my house, barely. Her parents trust her with the alcohol and she usually has good snacks. Her mom makes those coconut bonbons from scratch,” Kari says.

“Yeah, I love those. I’ll text her,” I say, and we both get on our phones. “Hey ... ” Kari’s fingers pause and she lifts a brow. “Don’t tell her about Bray.”

She curls her lips. “Secretive much?”

“I just don’t feel like the rehash.”

“Both of you are ... ”

“We’re what?”

“Secretive.”

“What is Patty secretive about?” I wasn’t aware that they ever talked without me to referee.

“Her, plenty, I’m sure. It must be a virgin thing.” She tugs me up. “Come on, let’s get out of here, please.”
